Luis Milla Aspas has recently been announced as Indonesia National Football Team head coach to replace Alfred Riedl. The 50 year old Spanish is appointed for Indonesia-Spain similarity in football, according to the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) chairman, Edy Rahmayadi. In addition, the PSSI Secretary General, Ade Wellington, also said that Milla's advantage is that he led Spain U-21 as the Champions of Euro U-21 in 2011.
Luis Milla was a defensive midfielder in his playing career. As a player, he played for three big teams, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Valencia. He had a 16-year-professional career. He won three La Liga titles with both Barcelona and Real Madrid. He played in a total of 338 games and scored 11 goals.
Milla spent his youth career at Teruel and Barcelona before being
promoted to Barcelona B in 1985. He was then given chances to show his
ability in Barcelona first team in 1988 and helped Barcelona win one La Liga title. In 1990, he moved to Real Madrid on a free transfer. He won two La Liga titles with Real Madrid. In 1997, he moved to Valencia after being failed to compete against Fernando Redondo in the first team. He played in 79 games for Valencia before retiring in 2001.
Luis Milla started his coaching career in 2006-2007 season at Pucol for one year and assisted Michael Laudrup at Getafe the following season. In summer 2008, Milla was named Spain U-19 coach following Vicente Del Bosque's appointment as Spain head coach. In 2009 UEFA European Championship, his team failed to go through the group stage. In the 2010, in France, he brought Spain U-19 to the final and was defeated by France. In the same year, he replaced Juan Ramón López Caro to lead Spain U-21 that qualified for the 2011 European championship. In the 2011 European championship finals in Denmark, Milla led the Spain U-21 to claim their third title. He was sacked after Spain U-21 failed to qualify to the 2012 London Olympics. Afterwards, Milla managed three clubs, Al Jazira,, Lugo, and Real Zaragoza during three years time.
In January 2017, Luis Milla was confirmed as Indonesia head coach after defeating another candidate, Luis Fernandez. As the new head coach, Luis Milla is given a target to win 2017 SEA Games gold medal. With his experiences, he is also expected to bring Indonesia to the semifinal of 2018 Asian Games.
